What is a referral letter?
A referral letter is a formal medical document written by a clinician to another healthcare professional — typically a specialist consultant, diagnostic service, or hospital. It contains your clinical history, presenting symptoms, examination findings, and the reason you're being referred. It's the gateway to accessing specialist care.
Can you refer me to a private specialist?
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons patients use our service. We can write referral letters to private consultants, hospitals, and clinics across the UK. Many private specialists require a GP referral letter before they'll see you — we provide exactly that, same day.
Can you refer me into the NHS?
Yes. Our referral letters are accepted by NHS trusts and can be used to access NHS specialist pathways. However, some NHS services may have their own referral criteria or require the referral to come from your registered NHS GP specifically. Your clinician will advise on the best route for your situation.
Can you refer me for an MRI, CT scan, or other imaging?
Yes. We regularly refer patients for MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray at private imaging centres. These are often available within days rather than the weeks or months you'd wait on the NHS. Your clinician will write the referral with the clinical indication so the imaging centre knows exactly what to look for.
Will the specialist accept a referral from The GP Service?
Yes. Our referral letters are written by licensed UK prescribing clinicians and are widely accepted by private specialists, private hospitals, and diagnostic providers. Some NHS services and individual consultants may have their own referral criteria — your clinician will advise on the best route for your situation.
How quickly will I receive the referral letter?
Your referral letter is written during the consultation and sent to your email the same day — typically within minutes of the call ending. If you'd like it sent directly to the specialist clinic, your clinician can do that during the consultation too.
Can I choose which specialist I'm referred to?
Yes. If you already know which specialist, clinic, or hospital you'd like to be referred to, tell your clinician and they'll address the letter accordingly. If you're unsure, your clinician can recommend appropriate specialists or services based on your condition and location.
What if the clinician doesn't think a referral is appropriate?
If the clinician determines that a referral is not clinically appropriate at this stage, they will explain why and discuss alternative options — which might include treatment, further investigation, or monitoring before referring. The consultation fee still applies as it covers the full clinical assessment.
How much does it cost?
A video consultation is £49, which covers the clinical assessment. An additional administration fee of £19.99 applies if a referral letter, prescription, or fit note is issued — taken as a separate payment during the consultation, before the document is issued. At booking, we pre-authorise only the £49 consultation fee. All fees are shown before you pay.
Can I get a referral at weekends or bank holidays?
Yes. We're open 365 days a year, 8am–5pm, including every weekend and bank holiday. You can book a same-day consultation and receive a referral letter any day of the year.
