A fit note is required by UK employers if you're off work for more than 7 days. Universities and colleges also require medical evidence for missed exams, extenuating circumstances, and extended absences. Our clinicians issue documentation for all of these.

What is a fit note?
A fit note (formally called a Statement of Fitness for Work) is a medical document issued by a qualified clinician. It was previously called a sick note. UK employers require a fit note if you're off work for more than 7 consecutive days. It can state that you're either "not fit for work" or "may be fit for some work" with recommended adjustments.
Can I get a medical certificate for university or college?
Yes. Our clinicians issue medical certificates that are widely accepted by UK universities and colleges for extenuating circumstances claims, missed exams, coursework deadlines, and interruption of study — where a certificate is clinically appropriate following your assessment.
Will my university accept a certificate from The GP Service?
Yes. Our certificates are issued by licensed UK prescribing clinicians, digitally signed and verifiable, and widely accepted by UK universities and colleges.
Will my employer accept a fit note from The GP Service?
Yes. Our fit notes are issued by licensed UK prescribing clinicians (GPhC-registered pharmacist independent prescribers) and are legally valid — since July 2022, UK law permits pharmacists and other registered healthcare professionals to sign fit notes, not only doctors. They are widely accepted by UK employers.
I missed an exam due to illness — can you help?
Yes. If you were too unwell to attend an exam, our clinician can assess you and issue a medical certificate documenting your illness and the period affected. This provides the evidence your university needs for an extenuating circumstances claim. Ideally, book a consultation as close to the illness as possible, though retrospective certificates can be issued where clinically appropriate.
Do I need a fit note for the first 7 days?
For employment, no — you can self-certify for the first 7 days, and a fit note is only required from day 8 onwards. For university, the rules vary — some institutions require medical evidence for any missed assessment regardless of duration. Check your university's extenuating circumstances policy, or ask our clinician during the consultation.
How quickly will I receive the fit note or certificate?
Where clinically appropriate, your fit note or medical certificate is issued during the consultation itself and sent to your email immediately. Most patients have it in their inbox before the call has ended.
Can I get a fit note at weekends, bank holidays, or during university holidays?
Yes. We're open 365 days a year, 8am–5pm, including every weekend, bank holiday, and throughout university holiday periods when campus health centres are typically closed.
Can the clinician backdate a fit note?
Fit notes can be backdated where clinically appropriate — for example, if you've been unwell for several days before seeking medical advice. Your clinician will discuss the appropriate dates based on your situation. They cannot issue a fit note for a period before the illness began.
What if the clinician doesn't issue a fit note?
If the clinician determines that a fit note or medical certificate is not clinically appropriate, they will explain why and advise on the best next steps. The consultation fee still applies as it covers the full clinical assessment. Fit notes are a clinical decision, not a guarantee.
How much does it cost?
A video consultation is £49, and a £19.99 administration fee applies where a fit note, prescription, or referral letter is issued. At booking, we pre-authorise only the £49 consultation fee — if a document is issued during your consultation, the £19.99 fee is taken as a separate payment before it is issued. Every fee is shown clearly before you pay.
