What Conditions Is Rosuvastatin Used For?
Rosuvastatin is indicated for:
infection of the heart valves caused by staphylococci, typically managed in hospital.
cellulitis, impetigo, infected wounds, infected eczema, and folliculitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

Always follow your clinician's instructions. Take rosuvastatin at the same time each day. It can be taken at any time — morning or evening, with or without food. Unlike some statins, which have greater efficacy when taken in the evening, rosuvastatin's long half-life means timing has minimal impact on efficacy. Antacids containing aluminium and magnesium hydroxide reduce rosuvastatin bioavailability. If you need to take such an antacid, space it at least 2 hours after rosuvastatin.
Side Effects of Rosuvastatin
Rosuvastatin is generally well tolerated. The majority of patients experience no significant side effects.

- Myalgia (muscle aches and pain) — the most common reason for statin discontinuation
- Nausea
- Constipation or abdominal discomfort
- Asthenia (weakness or fatigue)
- Dizziness
- Rhabdomyolysis — severe muscle breakdown causing myoglobinuria (dark brown urine), acute kidney injury, and potentially multi-organ failure; rare but potentially fatal; seek immediate medical attention if severe muscle pain with dark urine develops.
- Statin-associated immune-mediated necrotising myopathy (SIMNM) — a rare autoimmune muscle condition requiring specific treatment; persistent myopathy after stopping the statin.
Statins can cause muscle-related symptoms ranging from mild myalgia to severe rhabdomyolysis. Risk is increased by high doses, renal impairment, hypothyroidism, alcohol excess, and concurrent use of certain drugs. Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or dark urine to your clinician promptly.
Drug Interactions
Rosuvastatin may interact with other medications, including ciclosporin, gemfibrozil, and warfarin. Always inform your clinician about all medications you are taking.
Probenecid reduces the kidney excretion of phenoxymethylpenicillin, leading to higher and more sustained blood levels of the antibiotic. This interaction may occasionally be used intentionally but should only occur under medical supervision.
Antibiotics may reduce the immune response to live bacterial vaccines. Avoid vaccination during an antibiotic course unless clinically necessary.
Using desloratadine alongside other antihistamines – including over-the-counter products – increases the risk of side effects without providing additional benefit. Avoid taking multiple antihistamines simultaneously unless directed by a clinician.
Tetracyclines including doxycycline may reduce the bactericidal activity of penicillin antibiotics when used together. The two classes are not typically prescribed concurrently for the same infection.
Both doxycycline and retinoids independently increase intracranial pressure. Concurrent use significantly raises the risk of benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumour cerebri), which can cause severe headaches, visual disturbances, and in rare cases permanent vision loss. This combination must be avoided.
Important Warnings
Anaphylaxis has been reported with penicillin-class antibiotics, including flucloxacillin. Symptoms include sudden-onset hives, swelling of the throat or face, difficulty breathing, and collapse. Call 999 immediately and stop taking the medication if this occurs.
